5 Easy Changes You Can Make In Your Closet Today

Style doesn’t hit you like a ton of bricks. You won’t wake up one day and say “Bam! I’ve got it. This is my style.”

Because your style has always been with you.

Even if you’re a woman who thinks she doesn’t have style, you do. Trust me.

The things that makes it blossom are…

  • Knowledge, like understanding your color palette and body type

  • Letting it ebb and flow with your life. Sometimes you will want to spend, spend, spend and other times you won’t.

  • Letting it change as you will. If you’ve become a mother, gone through a divorce, lost a parent, or moved, chances are your style looks different after.

  • And maintenance. And today, I’m tackling maintenance.

Now, this may not be the most intellectual-stimulating side to style, but it’s an important side to it. If you don’t give your closet weekly love and care it needs, the whole thing falls apart.

But! The good thing about this part is that it’s really easy and if you move through your closet like you would a workout, my list of fixer uppers will take you no time at all.

Here are 5 easy changes you can make today in your closet to keep it neat, tidy, and on track…

Do them in this order, and you’ll feel like the queen of your closet.

5. Remove all dry cleaner bags, even from your nicest pieces.

Dry cleaners bags add a distraction in your closet. They take away from the overall aesthetic. They provide a barrier between you and really good stuff. They take up space. And! Over time, they’re actually bad for the clothes, because they don’t give clothing the proper oxygen flow they need.

4. Swap out dry cleaner hangers for plastic, wood, or my person favorite, velvet.

Dry cleaner hangers are meant to be temporary, so always keep them as that. Otherwise, they take up space and your better hangers sit there collecting dust.

3. Put shoes back-to-front.

One shoe goes towards you, one shoe goes towards the wall.

When you line your shoes up with one shoe forward and one shoe backward, a few things happen. You save space, because they move into the groove of each other, so they fit together tighter.

You’re able to see all the details of the shoes, front and back, which means you can use each detail for more thoughtful styling.

And! It makes them look oh-so pretty, which makes you more excited to go into your closet every morning.

2. Make sure everyone’s with their family.

And by this, I mean put the..

  • jackets with jackets

  • shirts with shirts

  • dresses and jumpsuits with dresses and jumpsuits

  • skirts with skirts

  • pants and denim with pants and denim

Don’t get too specific (notice I put pants and denim together), because you want to be able find and style pieces quickly, but you don’t want your creativity twarted by being robotic about your selection. When you have all your jackets together, you can just vibe with your wardrobe. “Ooooh is it a denim jacket day?!? Or maybe it’s time for some moto magic?!!” You be the judge.

1. Make sure everyone’s facing the right direction.

If one shirt’s lookin’ left and another’s lookin’ right, you can’t move through your wardrobe as quickly or easily to find exactly what you want or need.

Line all your pieces up towards the front of your closet, so as you peruse all the delicious goodies, the right piece pops out at you to aid you in conquering the day!
