What You Need to Know to Make Black Tights Fashion-Forward This Fall

Black tights should never be a Band-Aid.

Despite popular belief, black doesn’t go with everything.

Black should be treated with just as much care and curiosity as any other color or neutral in your closet.

Putting black tights with other items that enhance them creates an outfit that is put together, thoughtful, and chic.

Linking is your secret weapon.

Linking is one of the fundamental techniques you need for styling, so I always stress this.

To link your black tights to other pieces in your outfit, simply choose other pieces that speak to black. Dark, cool neutrals like black and charcoal or patterns which include black pair effortlessly with black tights.

Once you’ve linked the black tights to one or more other black elements, you can add a pop of color like I did above with purple dress and below with red tee.

Balancing proportion is key with black tights.

Black tights can feel frumpy if the proportion in the outfit is off.

To combat that, you can:

Pair a short dress with a long jacket (i.e., outfit one, above).

Tuck a top fully into a skirt (i.e., outfit two, above).

Pair a midi dress with a short or cropped jacket (i.e., outfit three, below).

Tuck a top fully into shorts (i.e., outfit four, below).

Keep it creative by pairing your black tights with unexpected items.

Black tights don’t just work well with winter wear.

You can repurpose summer pieces like denim shorts (below) or a silky skirt (outfit two) over your tights to give the summer pieces and the tights a fresh feel.
