TRY ON EVERYTHING.

It can be tough to embrace your new body if you weren’t looking to change your old one. Your new self needs nothing but love though, and to give love, you need to face your closet, try on your clothes and honestly evaluate what fits and what doesn’t.

It easy to go to a negative head space when you haven’t tried on and chances are, once you do, you’ll find out that more clothes fit than you think.

And the clothes that don’t fit? Get rid of them.

Your closet is about celebrating you in your life right now, and anything that doesn’t suit you, isn’t worthy of your wardrobe.

WEIGHT GAINED? MAKE A BUTTON-DOWN INTO A SHIRT JACKET.

This is a trend we’ve seen for most of 2020, but it’s especially perfect for you if you’ve gained weight across your chest. If your button-down shirt and/or dress is gapping across the front, just open it up and throw it over leggings + a tank for an effortlessly chic look.

WEIGHT GAINED? MOVE YOUR SKIRT FARTHER UP YOUR ABDOMEN.

Sitting your skirt on or slightly above your waist is often a flattering way to go, but if you’ve gained weight in your abdomen below your belly button, this technique will also allow you to fit into tighter skirts more easily. You can use this technique with skirts that have a back zipper or a stretch waist band.

If you’re unsure where your waist is, stand straight up, put your arms by your side, then bend to one side. The waist is where a crease appears at the spot your body bends, right across your midsection.

Blouse a sweatshirt over the top of the skirt to finish the look with a comfortable touch.

WEIGHT GAINED? DRESS UP YOUR BIKER SHORTS INTO A DRESSY CASUAL LOOK.

Like the shirt jacket, biker shorts aren’t hard to find, because they’ve been trending for most of 2020. Repurpose your favorite pair of stretch shorts into a dressy casual look by adding a flowy blouse, heeled booties, and statement earrings.

WHETHER YOU’VE GAINED OR LOST, ADD A HOLE TO YOUR PANTS BELT TO ADJUST THIS ACCESSORIES TO YOUR BODY.

If you’ve gained weight, add a hole closer to the end. If you’ve lost weight, add a hole closer to the inside. You can have a new hole put in at Austin Shoe Hospital.

WHETHER YOU’VE GAINED OR LOST, PULL OUT YOUR WRAP DRESS.

Wrap dresses are incredible (thanks, DVF!). They’re pretty much just adjustable dresses. A classic wrap dress will have a couple strings through the waist of the dress for you to wrap it, so use these to tighten or loosen the dress depending on what makes your body feel good.

Add a teddy bear coat over the top, and you’re all set for a date night with your partner or a virtual gathering with friends.

WEIGHT GAINED? USE TIGHTS TO HELP SLIDE ON A STRETCH DRESS.

Tights are the perfect addition to give you a bit of warmth during the holiday season, but they can also help you seamlessly put on a stretch dress. Tights will smooth out your silhouette, making stretch dresses more comfortable and secure. Make sure to bring your tights up to your waist to highlight your shape, then add the stretch dress over top for a look that can work for casual or dressy casual.

WEIGHT LOST? USE TIGHTS OR LEGGINGS TO HELP FILL IN A STRUCTURED DRESS.

Unlike a stretch dress, structured dresses don’t mold to your body. If you’ve lost weight, but want to fit a more rigid dress, use your tights to fill in the space between the dress and your body. If the tights are still too thin, add leggings for a bit more fabric and texture between you and the dress.

WEIGHT LOST? TAILOR THE TOP OF YOUR DENIM.

If you tend to lose weight around your waist, adjust your favorite pair of denim to your new body by having your jeans taken in at the back of the waist. No need to alter the rest. A looser leg will give you a straight leg denim silhouette, which is the trendiest denim for 2020.

WEIGHT LOST? LAYER A TURTLENECK UNDER A DRESS OR JUMPSUIT TO FILL IN SPACE.

Just like the tights, you can fill in the space between your body and a dress or jumpsuit by adding a turtleneck or sweater underneath the dress or jumpsuit.

WEIGHT LOST? COVER EMPTY SPACE BY TYING UP A BUTTON-DOWN OVER A DRESS.

If you’ve lost weight in your chest, tighten up the top of a dress by tying a button-down over the dress. For cooler days, you can also throw a sweatshirt on over a dress to cover space.
