The App That Makes It Easy To Sell Your Unwanted Clothes

COVID-19 has thrown me for a loop. This blog is dedicated to a lot of different style and wardrobe topics, but when I usually conceptualize a post, the goal is to get you out the door and feeling great in what you’re wearing all day long.

These days, you’re likely to only leave the house to buy groceries or go on a walk — both of which you can do in your sweats, and I gladly do that same.

But you still need to keep moving forward with your style.

Activities like cleaning out your closet and organizing your wardrobe will make it so that when the time comes to jump back into going into the office or out on the town, you feel ready, refreshed, and equipped with outfits you love.

Whether you’ve already conquered your clean out (congrats!) or are just getting started (you’ve got this!), there is one resource that’s super useful in helping you sell your to-go pile.

The app is called Poshmark. Some of you are probably familiar, and many of you may not be.

You can use the app during your clean out to sell as you go or add everything to your digital closet at the end.

A few cool things about Poshmark…

It’s easy to get emotionally attached to clothes. It’s often the reason why we keep them past their expiration date. Poshmark helps your old clothes get new homes, so you know they continue on living their happy little lives.

It’s eco-friendly, too! When people purchase from you, they’re filling a hole in their closet without creating waste. Yay for Mother Earth!

One thing that can be hard about selling at consignment shops is that you don’t control how much they’re selling your item for. That can leave you feeling out of control and like you invested so much is something that’s now selling for so little. With Poshmark, you set your price, which means you get to be in control and comfortable with how much you sell at.

Steps to sell on Poshmark:

  • Download the App.

  • Set up your profile.

  • Take pictures of each item you want to sell.

You can upload 8 pictures per item, so I recommend doing at least 7 or 8 for each one. The more you show of your item, the more trustworthy and communicative you are to your buyer.

Take your pictures in a well-lit room with few distractions around the item. Buyers need to know where to look and what they’re looking at.

Take pictures of as many angles of the item as possible. For example, with shoes, get the heels, soles, tops, front, external sides of both, internal sides of both, and full shoe.

  • Add your item to your “closet” by clicking the “sell” button in the middle of the bottom of the app.

  • Go as detailed with your item title and description as possible. Note any flaws in the description to be as honest and clear as possible with your buyer.

  • You’ll be asked to add the original price of the item. If you don’t know, go ballpark. You won’t be penalized for not knowing.

  • Create your selling price. I recommend selling at 25% of the original price, but if you want to sell at a higher percentage, go for it.

  • If potential buyers “love” your item by clicking the heart emoji on it, you can offer them a special discount in the bottom right hand corner with the button “offer/price drop.” This is often a good way to seal the deal.

  • Shipping is free for the seller, so once you item sells, you’ll print the pre-paid label and take it to the Post Office. You can provide the box or the post office will, because it’s Priority Mail.

  • You’ll then go into your app, then go to your profile > my sales > click the item. Check off the 3 boxes about preparing your item and the “I shipped” button to let the buyer know the shipped.

  • Once your item arrives at its new home, the seller will accept the item if it’s in good shape. You’ll then receive your payment in your profile under “my balance.”

  • Use it as credit to buy on the app or transfer it out to your bank account, and you’re all set!

Got any questions? Leave me one below! I would love to chat with you and help you any way I can.

Shop my closet for Austin Pets Alive!

Right now APA! Thrift Shops are closed due to shelter-in-place, so as a volunteer, I’m selling their pieces on my Poshmark. 100% of the proceeds from everything in my “closet” right now goes directly to Austin Pets Alive, so take a look. You may find something you love.

Lots of love and joy!
