6 Things You Need to Know to Wear Hats Like An Expert
6. GO BIG OR GO HOME.
I attribute the commonly said phrase, “I’m not a hat person,” to a simple fact: You’re choosing the wrong hat.
People often play it too safe with hats, which makes your hat feel dull and makes you feel like it’s all your fault for not being a hat person. But rest assured, it’s no genetic fault of your head. By challenging yourself to try on on hats that you think are really chic or edgy, but feel outside of your comfort zone. You’ll likely be pleasantly surprised.
You look good in them.
If you’ve never tried hats before, start with a medium brim hat for something that makes a statement, but isn’t the whole enchilada.
If you’ve already got some hats in your closet, but feel like you don’t have the right one, now is the time to dive in. Go wide brim.

5. KEEP YOUR LINE OF SIGHT OPEN.
Make sure you're using the hat to highlight your face, rather than cut yourself off from view.
To do this, move your hat off your eyebrow line and up towards the middle of your forehead.
Be careful not to go too far past your hairline. This will create a halo and instead of covering your face by having your hat too low, it will distract from it.
TOO LOW.
TOO HIGH.
JUST RIGHT.

4. NO FLY AWAYS.
Your hat need to be secure on your head, so a gust of wind doesn’t pick it up and have you running after it. To avoid the sprint, make sure your hat is sitting securely on your head, not on top of your head.
Sitting a hat on top of your head can make you look silly and, like the halo in the last tip, it can distract from you.
Putting a hat securely on your head allows the hat to compliment your face and feel grounded on your body.

3. HATS DESERVE STYLING TOO.
If you’re going to wear a hat, it’s just as important to style it with the rest of your outfit.
Link your hat color to other parts of your outfit like a pants belt, a pattern in your dress, your shoes, or a bag. This will ensure it looks put together and enhances the outfit, rather than feels like a last minute addition.
HOW I’VE STYLED THIS HAT:
The warm vanilla color in my hat links to my cream buttons. The jet black hat band links to the dark navy button down as well as my off black denim. Each piece is linking, talking to each other, and creating a composed picture.

2. AVOID OVERLY FLIMSY HATS.
Flimsy hats are far from awesome for lots of reasons…
They aren’t as impactful as a structured hat.
They lose shape easily.
They get in your line of sight.
They never look quite as put together as a flat brim hat.
They never look quite as cool as a flat brim hat.
In short, stick to hats that can stand up to you and for you. :)
1.GIVE YOUR HAT SOME LOVE.
Taking care of your hat means handling it and storing it in ways that will preserve it and make it easy to style.
Grab your hat by the brim, not the crown, to avoid distorting the shape.
You can store your hat in a hat box, but I love to use my hats as art. Hang each hat on a nail in your closet or bedroom to add art to your space and make it easier to see all your hats.
When you can see what you have, it makes it way more likely that you’ll use it on a regular basis.
