9 Tips to Choose & Style Your All-Season Basics

TEES + TANKS

9. Know your necklines. Crew neck tees are the trendiest cut right now, so if you’re looking for something to keep your look feeling fashion forward, this is the cut.

8. Go by your body type. The length of one t-shirts vs. another can vary dramatically, so use a keen eye to decide right off the bat if a tee will be too long for you. Then, try on.

If you’re petite, try the Rickie Slub Cotton Crop T-Shirt by Le Ligne.

If you’re tall, try the Clarity Tee by Free People.

7. Your color palette should determine which neutrals or colors you choose, which means white or black may not be the best choice for you. Warmly complected? Go with caramel, tan, camel, or sand. Cooly complected? You can stick to white, black, charcoal, or taupe.

If you’re warmly complected, try the Whisper Cotton Crew Neck Tee in Rusted Tin.

If you’re cooly complected, try the Whisper Cotton V-Neck Tee in Distant Surplus.

6. Think like a stylist. If a tee or tank is a little too short or too long once you’ve tried on, consider how you can make the tee work for you. Too long? Use my favorite acronym A.B.T. to always be tuckin’. Too short? Try a high-waisted pant with a 9”, 10”, or 11” rise to fill in the space between pant and top.

DENIM

5. Decide what you’re searching for before you search for it.

There are so many styles to choose from, so narrowing your quest will keep you from getting overwhelmed. To do this, pick two descriptors: cut, wash, distressing, or rise. For example, mid-rise straight leg denim, light wash high-waisted denim, or ripped bootcut denim will do. Then, search online or keep these descriptors in store to guide you to your perfect pair.

If you’re looking for high-waisted, straight leg jeans, try Levis Ribcage Denim.

If you’re looking for dark-wash, skinny jeans, try The Looker by Mother.

4. If a certain brand fit before, chances are that it’ll fit again. Expanding your brand awareness helps you to keep up with fashion, but in denim, sticking to an oldie can get you what you want faster and more accurately.

One of my favorite brand for myself and clients is Madewell.

3. There is no congruency in fit across the fashion industry, which means googling straight leg jeans will give you a plethora of different cuts. Don’t beat yourself up if you’ve tried a handful and nothing’s working. Just switch up the rise or brand and keep trying. Your ideal fit is out there and it can take a strong will to find it.

SNEAKERS

2. When choosing a comfy shoe, make sure it’s actually comfy.

One of the biggest ways you can work against yourself when it comes to style is convincing yourself that a piece works for you when it doesn’t. Shoes are a place where it’s easy for this to happen, especially when you expect comfort. When your new sneakers arrive in the mail, give them a test walk, and go with your gut. Can you wear then for hours on end? Do you feel a blister coming on? How is the arch support? Being honest with yourself will help you separate the good from the bad and lean into your intuition more easily going forward.

1.When in doubt, go with white. In the giant pool of trends that constantly exists in fashion, there are sometimes very special pieces that come along that makes styling particularly simple and straight forward. White sneakers are exactly that. They go with everything. Pair them with trendy pieces, classic staples, any color, all the neutrals, and somehow, they’ll elevate it all.
