The 2000s are back. Here are 7 trends for summer that’ll give you all the nostalgia and a fresh, new look.
LIGHTWEIGHT CARDIGANS
Nothing is a more important to carry with you for the summer in Austin than an outer layer. Every restaurant, movie theatre and office cranks up the AC, so you’ve got to be ready to go from the heat to the cold quickly. For all these times, roll up your cardigan, throw it in your tote and reach for it when you need it.
MESH TOPS
This throwback piece is perfect for warm weather because the fabric often allows a breeze to flow through and cool you down. A lot of the mesh tops (like the Topshop one below) are also see-through, which means you can layer with a bralette or sports bra for brunch or a night out and it’ll feel cooler than a lot of other materials because of the ultra-thin texture.
FLATFORM SANDALS
We’re all going out a bit more these days, but heels (or at least high ones) are still not fully comfortable to get back into for most of us. Insert flatform sandals. These shoes will give you the lift you want without the pain of heels. Give them a try for everything from travel to hiking to baby showers — there’s a style for almost every activity.
BABYDOLL DRESSES
Nothing is simpler to throw on during the summer than a babydoll dress. It’s a single piece (rather than separates), so it’s easy to reach for when you’ve got little time to spare with styling. The flowy silhouette allows air to move through it, keeping you cool in the hottest temps. And! There are lots of styles to choose from, so finding one that fits your body type is a breeze.
LIGHT, BRIGHT COLORS
The 2000s was all about the romantic and feminine colors, so welcoming them back is easy because they are joyful and fun. If you’re weary of the intensity of the colors, just dip your toe in. Try an accent color with a bag or top, then go in a little further with a dress or bold pant. Pretty soon you’ll be more comfortable with the brights and styling them like a pro.
SILKY TOPS
This date night staple allows you to balance a simple silhouette with a statement texture. The key to finding your favorite is picking a neckline that fits your body type. For hourglass, apple, and pear body types, try a square neckline. Inverted triangle and rectangle body types work well with a halter neckline.
PLATFORM SNEAKERS
For all the running around that your life requires, no shoe is better than a sneaker. Adding a platform into the mix gives you an updated look and the comfort of a lift, so you feel supported in all the little tasks you’ve got to accomplish on any given day.
