The Dog Days of Summer Style

August is the hottest month of the year in Texas and, unfortunately, going out and about naked is not an option. Staying in to avoid the heat isn’t ideal either.  Let’s look at some cool, comfortable, and stylish outfits you can wear to avoid untimely sweat marks and embarrassment.

Aside from work outfits, I ventured into the desert heat for three outings this week. I attended a cake decorating class, went on a coffee date with my husband, and spent some time by the pool.

Since layering isn’t an option in August like it is in other seasons, use accessories to add depth to your outfits. Accessories can be more than just jewelry, though. While I did wear some of my favorite jewelry with my outfits, I also accessorized by mixing and matching metals, incorporating my nail color into my outfit, and wearing multiple patterns and killer heels to bring a pop to each outfit.

I anticipated being on my feet a lot during my cake decorating class, so I wanted to wear flats. These shimmery bronze flats from Anthropologie are so comfortable, mesh nicely with the silver jewelry, and bring a flirty feel to this sporty outfit. The chinos add a pop of my favorite coral color and fit nicely without clinging and creating sweat spots.

For an evening lounging poolside I grabbed my favorite lightweight romper, a red bando top, and red lipstick to match my newly polished look. And of course, my new sunglasses bring the whole look a perfectly flirty air.

My husband and I live near an adorable coffee shop we like to walk to and since it’s so close, I could stand to wear these stilettos on the walk over. My goal for this outfit was a clean look (hence, the white shoes and shorts), multiple patterns that felt summer-y, and a messy hairdo paired with a nude lip. The necklace just felt like the perfect balance to the outfit.

Choose your fabrics and colors intentionally as well. Linens and cottons are going to be airier while polyester and leather will feel sticky and frustrating. Lighter colors will be refreshing. We still have a few more months of this heat, so venture out with the confidence that what you’re wearing is as stylish as you are and as comfortable in this heat as is actually possible.
