Spotlight on Local: SCATTERED Designs

Why did you develop the brand you did? What does it mean to you and what do you think it means to your clients?

My company SCATTERED designs is the outcome of several years discovering and experimenting different mediums to use as a creative outlet. I decided I wanted to pull the trigger and start my brand after realizing the corporate world was not for me. Today, SCATTERED designs is just the beginning of what I can offer to this world, to show women they are already beautiful as they are and that they can express themselves boldly and authentically.

What is the favorite piece you make or sell? Why does it stand out?

My favorite piece will always be the classic “goddess, marah-cotta” earrings. While it’s one of the more simple designs, it is one of the first designs I ever came out with when I first launched the brand and the one that holds truest to my style and aesthetic. I truly believe they can look fabulous on anyone and while I am always proud to see any design being worn by my customers, marah-cotta holds a special place in my heart! Also, they also will be playing a part in my new rebranding that will be announced in the new year!

How has being an entrepreneur effected the way you view the world?

Becoming an entrepreneur has genuinely shown me more of the person I was meant to be. I see WORK in a totally different light and how it’s not something that has to be dreadful. Taking that “leap of faith” and now running my business full time has shown me that it is indeed possible, and because I know myself, I know fully that if I can do it then so can anyone else that desires to become an entrepreneur. I love that I have full autonomy to use my skills and gifts to help and encourage others in their path of life.

Does being a business owner impact your personal life? How?

Absolutely. It has drastically affected the joy that I carry throughout the work week, it has tested my work ethic and organizational skills and allows me connect with people in a completely new and uplifting way. On another note, I also have more time to spend doing more things I love such as serving my husband, playtime with our two puppies, growing my YouTube channel.

What do you hope will change about your business in five years?

Within the next five years I would love to be at the capacity where I am able to hire employees and potentially build a team. I’d love to see my brand expand into different creative areas of my interests such as interior decorating, plants, and fashion. Really just lifestyle in general! I absolutely adore working with clay and would love to expand my craft into different mediums.

What do you hope will be the same about your business in five years?

I really hope that my business and brand will always be an encouragement to other women who need to take a step of faith. No matter what my company looks like in the future, I hope I never stop sharing my story and the way God has orchestrated everything to get me to where I am today. And I hope that my business will never stop growing me as a person and entrepreneur and that it will never leave me feeling complacent.

How do you try to support Austin women?

I always want to find more ways to support the women of Austin. In my most recent partnership I donated a percentage of profits to local organization, Austin Angels, that happens to be 90% women-employed and works to serve and support the foster care system. Whether it’s donating a pair of earrings to an organization or individual in need of funding, giving my personal experience/advice to new up and coming artists, or a simple shout out over social media, anything I can do lift a sister up!

What can the city government or local community do to support your business (besides visiting it more)?

Overall, I am ALL for shopping small because if you think about all of the families that you are providing for when purchasing their products. By shopping small you are making a huge difference for your community and the more we can support small businesses, the more others can find the support and inspiration to start their own entrepreneurial journey.

What about your brand or yourself do you most associate with Austin? How does it reflect Austin?

The maker community in Austin is absolutely incredible and I am so humbled to be a part of it. It has been such an experience and an eye-opener to be surrounded by so many people that use their creative gifts and abilities to not only make a living for themselves, but to create something bigger than themselves and to impact the community in their own unique way. I’m still learning where my place is in that mission but I am stoked that I get to be in reaching distance from such talented makers and artists. I love how collaborative the maker community, specifically women-owned businesses are here in Austin.

If you were allowed to only eat one food every day for the rest of your life, but it provided you all the nutrition you needed, what would that food be and what do you love about it?

Chicken noodle soup. Hands down. It is the ultimate comfort food and no matter what the temperature is outside, I’ll always be down for some homemade chicken noodle soup!
