Lacking style inspiration when you walk into your closet? Here’s how to decorate it to spark creativity and joy.

By now we’ve all been through many stages of the pandemic — emotional waves, strokes of genius, Netflix till your eyes hurt. The ups and downs are often followed by change, maybe to your mindset and possibly to your space.

All over social I see people rearranging whole rooms, bookshelves, and of course, closets.

At this point, you’ve probably cleaned out yours. And if you haven’t cleaned out your closet, you definitely should! You can start here.

And after clean out comes something a little unexpected: decorating.

Yep, that’s right. Your closet isn’t just a storage space.

It’s so much more than that.

It’s a room you go into every morning. And whether you’re excited about it or not, the closet, and the outfits you create inside it, will affect your mindset all day long.

That’s where decorating is helpful. It brings love, personality, joy, creativity, and fun to your space. Together, these things create the perfect environment to concoct outfit combinations that make you feel like the beautiful and powerful woman you are.

So today is the day to dive in decorating. Watch the video to see how I like to decorate my own space, plus read the tips below to get ideas on what you should add to your own.

And once you’ve watched the video, I would love to hear your thoughts! Leave me a comment below and share what you’re most excited to add to your closet space.

Lots of love and joy!

Add a rug.

You’ll want to choose your rug based the size and type of space you have, just like you would in any other room.

You’ll also want to consider your personal style when choosing a rug. Got a closet full of neutrals? Get a neutral rug to match. Are you the unofficial queen of all things colorful? Get a rug that has aaaaall the colors in it.

If you have pets, I would highly recommend checking out Ruggable for a rug you can wash. I also love Austin Rug Co., a woman-owned local shop with a very chic selection.

Add art.

The closet can be a really cool space to fit the art that doesn’t fit anywhere else in the house. Since you (or you and your partner) are the only people going into your closet often, this space can be a bit more eclectic.

When my husband and I moved in together, I had some more feminine art that didn’t suit his taste as much as mine. The closet has become the perfect home for all of that, since it’s my space alone.

You can also add your kids art, painting by friends, or any other personalized pieces that bring you joy into the closet.

Add photos.

When I walk into my closet, one of my wedding photos is directly to my left and another one is directly to my right. When I stop to look at them, I can’t help but smile big.

Add photos to your closet that make you smile really big. Photos of your friends, family, partner, flowers, travel — whatever it is that makes you happy, tack it up.

Use your pieces as art.

Out of sight, out of mind is never truer than in your closet, and using your pieces as art is the perfect way to see what you want to style and use it more frequently.

The pieces that are going to be easiest to add to your walls are bags, hats, and jewelry. Hang them all in area or fill in blank space all over your closet to creative an eclectic vibe.

Use functional elements to add personality.

To hang hats and bags, you’ll need hooks. Take this opportunity to incorporate your style with these hooks. You can find lots of funky, functional designs on Amazon, Wayfair, or West Elm.

Another functional element you may need, which can also add style to your space, is lighting.

If you love a luxe look and have a large walk-in closet, add a chandelier.

For a more intimate space, you can add a string of twinkle lights or stick-on lights to illuminate your all your pieces and the art you’ve added.
