Want to stop making impulse buys online? Here are 5 steps to bring intention and clarity to your online shopping.

Online shopping is more dangerous than ever. While retail-to-go is in effect, there’s nothing easier than adding piece after piece to your virtual cart from your couch.

Shopping is a high, which means the feeling you get when you purchase that cart full of clothes can end up being in control of you the whole time you’re shopping.

But it’s time for you to take the reins. You should feel joy when you shop, but on your own terms.

This week’s blog is about how to give yourself the pleasure of the shop without later feeling all the remorse, fear, and anxiety.

Watch the video and read up below on my five tips to shopping with intention and clarity, so you stay in the drivers seat the whole shop through.

Lots of love and joy!

5. Start in your closet and make a list of which items you need.

By this point in social distancing, you’ve probably done some clean out.

And if you haven’t, you should definitely sign up for this right now.

With all the new found space, it’s now easier to see the trends in your closet: what you like, what you still have too much of, and what’s missing.

Let these three things guide you to create a shop list for your online adventure.

4. Make the pledge: If it doesn’t fit, I’ll return it.

This may seem intuitive but I can’t leave this point unsaid.

I’ve walked into way too many closets with items that were intended for return, but never made it.

If a piece you order doesn’t fit your body, life, or style, return it.

If not, you lose money and you end up taking up space in your closet that could be filled with a piece you absolutely love or that could just give your closet a little room to breathe.

3. Give yourself a budget per item or per shop.

Little steps add up to big changes, and creating a budget for your shopping trip sets you on a positive path to more financial successes in the future.

There are two ways you can budget.

Option 1: Decide the overall budget, then decide how much you’ll spend per item. If you like to invest way more on pieces like shoes and bags over shirts, this is the way to go.

Option 2: Set the overall budget and leave it open. This allows you to splurge on whatever piece makes you the happiest no matter what category it fits into.

2. Be specific in your search.

You’ve made your list. You’ve made your pledge. You’ve set your budget. Now it’s time to find what you need.

There are two ways you can search.

Option 1: Head to your favorite online department store, like Nordstrom, and search exactly what you’re looking for by using the filters on the left side of the screen. Tailor as many filters as possible, like color, size, pattern, and cut, to your search, so the results bring you to the exact type of item(s) you’re looking for.

Option 2: Start your search on Google. Use your style vocabulary to go as specific as possible in your search, so that you stay on track with finding the item. Instead of “work top,” look at “cobalt, short-sleeved work blouse.” Instead of “work heels,” look up  “pointed-toe black matte leather pumps.” The more descriptive you are, the more accurate your search will be.

1. Rate your piece.

Buying pieces that you’re on the fence about is an easy way to end up with a closet full of clothes you don’t wear.

When your cart(s) is full, give each piece a rating on a 1-10 scale. If it’s less than a 7, don’t buy it.

Remember, your style is a celebration of you, so anything that feels less than a celebration of your life, style, and body doesn’t need to be in your closet.

Put it into play.

Now that you’re ready to online shop, I would love to hear from you!

Which step are your most excited to try? Which were you most surprised by?

Leave me a comment below and share your thoughts.

Lots of love and joy,

Raquel
